He was an administrator by vocation. He even felt he was born to be an administrator.
There are administrators who control processes, and there are those who control
people. His vision of his job was to be a creator, with people as the building
blocks. Just like paint would serve the painter to create a picture, he’d
create the whole company structure with all the exciting people. They’d
have to obey him though, so the machine would run smoothly. Once, a boy with
a guitar stopped him on the street. The administrator agreed to listen to a
poem written by the boy. It was a fast, rhythmically spoken text, stating that
all young people should enjoy work as a form of artistic creation, without
being influenced by their wives, and they should fight the authorities. The
guitar was just hanging at his hip; it was his “B” poem. He was
a high school student hitchhiking around and making his living by reciting
his poem, “I was once where you are now.” “Unless your art
is really about fighting, you either create art, or fight the authorities,” said
the administrator. “And, if you choose to fight them, you become one
of them.”
