His name was Name. His duties
were changing depending on the needs of each performance. He had to control
the voltage, the distribution and the amount of energy sources, so all would
go smoothly. He kept a box filled with lighters and another one with candles
and matches. Some performances required candles to be used, especially those
written before the electricity was invented. He always thought it was funny
that he, an electrician, was responsible for candles. He would like to use
the electric ones, pretending the real candles, but this was not allowed for
the most realistic effect. The box was filled with all sorts of candles, some
color coded for various holidays, other shaped and colored to mimic various
objects. The lighters were another story. Some had a battery in them that needed
a shake, like a good cocktail. It happened just once, that during a concert
performed on a stormy weather the electricity went off. Everyone thought it
was close to impossible, as all was set-up with several backup systems, the
breakers were solid, and it would take the impossible to happen. This was a
glorious day of Name. He handed the lighters to all the musicians and asked
them to turn themselves into mimes. It was a rainstorm outside, so people would
not like to travel home. Those in the auditorium who were claustrophobic suffered
without any light source. “Just play,” he instructed the stunned
musicians who never in their lives had to use their bodies without the instrument
for the entertaining purposes. He set up a sample by walking around the stage
and talking to himself loudly. His light kept pulling out the details and fragments
of the objects. The tuba player followed him. He took the lighter and started
a light fight with the electrician. Both went down. Then, the pianist himself
started to get funny. His light examined the audience. How offensive. He was
pointing with a snap of light onto someone’s head, and begun to talk
and describe it to the whole house. The nice thing was that the description
was friendly and heartwarming, so not only the rest of the audience, but the
person being described laughed. It became a routine for an annual Halloween
party for the patrons of the Orchestra.
