Excuse me for cutting in, says an older patron; there is something
else what is meant by a word ‘rats.’ People call rats the non-union
employers, informants and breakers of union contracts. Workers produce more
and more efficiently and many employers do not need to hire a big crew any
longer. There are so many people around; all of them are angry and scared to
be fired. They go on a strike. Those who desert this cause refuse to join the
organized protest, or leak information to their bosses are called rats: they
rat on their fellow workers. When our trade union goes on strike, we use giant
inflatable rats as a sign of opposition against our employers or the companies
that employ non-union workers, adds another patron of the library.
