Brian, a musician who created electronic music, cooperated with neurologists as their consultant. Neuroscientists found that music involved many different areas distributed through the brain without any specialized center for music. With help of Brian as a cognitive science specialist, they tried to gain a firmer understanding of how music is processed in the brain. Brian met Louis, recovering in a hospital after an accident. With his newly discovered knack for composing music and his neophyte's enthusiasm, Louis learned from Brian the arcane techniques of electronic music. He and Brian prepared an interactive composition about the speed of light, as a submission for the international music competition “Ars Electronica”
At the conference they visited a technology exhibit, and they were handed a flyer telling, "WHAT IS YOUR DATA WORTH?" Brian's work resides entirely on the computer. He has a backup on his hard drive, but both the computer and the drive are at his home. He had a dream that when he returned home he found that both his laptop and the drive were gone. He was awoken up by his own despair and regrets. "Hey, you've had a millionaire's dream," Louis told him. "Now you can imagine what type of dreams they have." The very same day Brian bought two more terabyte drives. He copied all his compositions, and placed one drive in his office, then sent another one to his sister. Then, he burned a bunch of DVDs and mailed them in a package to a close friend across the ocean. Since then, whenever he creates something new, he needs to update all five places. His new fear is that the media storage system would change.
