A. Ursyn Orchestra / Viola Harvey
The Viola

The viola is the bigger brother of the violin. Because it is bigger, it has a lower sound. Although it has the same fingerings as the violin, viola players need to stretch their fingers more than violinists.

Like many other instruments in the orchestra, the viola has changed in size many times. Throughout its history, its size has ranged from 14 inches to 18 inches. Even though the viola was very unpopular it its early days, today no orchestra could survive without them.

To hear the viola in action, listen to:
Berlioz: Harold in Italy
Elgar: Enigma Variations

Violinist

Harvey (a viola player) keeps a memory book and is often engaged in adding new entries. His colleagues, Peter and Louis have no doubts that he pastes photos, pictures, and cuttings from  newspapers there. When Harvey let them look at the content of his memory book, they found verses that Harvey wrote after performances to commit important events to his memory. Being dearly loved and admired by his listeners inspired Harvey to write poetry. As Peter and Louis continued looking through his memory book, they noticed that Harvey wrote verses about his former girlfriends in a chronological order. They were surprised to find the names of most of the female orchestra members
